The Kiwanis Club of Blossburg was chartered August 4, 1973 under the sponsorship of the Kiwanis Club of Mansfield. This club was formed to benefit the community, especially the youth. We sponsor two Key Clubs which consist of youth with the same objectives as the Kiwanis Club. The two clubs are students in the North Penn and Liberty High Schools and both work closely with the Kiwanis Club of Blossburg. We offer a $1,000 scholarship to the outstanding Key Club member in each school to be used towards their college education. In 1977 we began construction of a Kiwanis Community Center on the Island Park under Pres. John Davies and project chairman Tom Phinney. Kiwanian Bob Jones donated the trees and Kiwanians Harold House and Ray Kaminski, saw mill owners, offered their expertise and equipment to cut the trees and cure the logs. The trees were all cut by Kiwanians, but not without some near fatalities. The 40 X 80 - foot wood frame building with brick veneer contains a large all-purpose room with fireplace, kitchen, rest rooms, and storage area. The $65,000 structure was built with a $15,000 Packer Foundation Grant, $20,000 grant from the Kiwanis Club, and $30,000 worth of donated labor by the Tioga County Area Voc.-Tech. School students and faculty. The building was dedicated February 18, 1979 and turned over to the Blossburg Borough. The building is a very valuable addition to the community and is used constanly for meetings of many organizations, showers, family reunions, birthday parties, scouts and all summer for Partners in Progress working with young children. The Club currently consists of 25 very active members. |
